SUNDAY 29th ERNIE DAY PASSED ON Ernie Day, cinematographer of Superman IV, passed away last November. His career details here.
WHAT HAPPENED WHEN SUPERMAN TURNED BACK TIME? I've stayed out of the fan edit conversations, it's a legal minefield --- but I was sent a link which made me sit up. Just check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlGEvEvRilc The guy is amazingly talented, and I guess for no money at all, it boggles the mind at what can be achieved!
SCOTT BOSCO SAYS MICHAEL THAU IS WRONG ABOUT THE SOUND ISSUE Scott Bosco: Michael is wrong. Dolby has certain standards and originally set up the process of Dolby Surround to create in a constant way how a film would sound. Only earlier films not in the Dolby Surround process done in, and listed as Dolby System had only Dolby noise reductions via compression, were different. Once Dolby Surround came into being in the mid-70s the standard
of 4.0 tracks, where were encoded into 2.0 as a compressed format to fit
onto 35mm film, then decoded in the theatre back into 4.0. This matrix
is comprised of Front Left, Front Center, Front Right and a MONO rear,
or Surround track. Going by the way WB has avoided calls and the way a previous thread was deleted [HTF?] I dare say someone is being a mouth piece to cover up shoddy work. My info is not via some fan but rather the company who invented the sound format, and what Ive heard in the past. BTW need I mention how slanted the archival footage for the 2001
SUPERMAN is? It was nothing short of revivalist history as per the director.

SUNDAY 22nd MIKE THAU RESPONDS TO SUPERMAN ORIGINAL AUDIO ARGUEMENT Mike has responded to the issue at capedwonder: If you've seen the squabbling on the net about Superman The Movies original sound mix being messed up on the DVD's--they're completely wrong. The dialog being "draped" across the front three speakers and the reverb into the surrounds was the way it was mixed in 1978. This was one of the factors that led us to decide to re-mix the film. Back in 2000, as always, we brought Dolby to the studio to verify the set up, because we were working with mixes that were recorded over 20 year before. This has nothing to do with a messed up transfer to video in the 80s. This can be verified by playing a VHS or laserdisc (both have the original 2 track mix) through a correctly set up Dolby Pro-Logic sound system. Or if someone really wants to be thorough go to a theater that shows one of the old prints of the original cut, as long as the theaters sound is set up correctly. I haven't tested this myself, and to be frank, I don't watch the picture until the end of the year unless I'm forced by gunpoint. BTW: When you first insert the replacement disc in the dvd player it will
jump straight to the remixed track unless you know where to find the original
soundtrack.
10th ANNIVERSARY OF THE STAR CEREMONY Jim Bowers has set-up the page commemorating the 10th Anniversary of Christopher Reeve's Star Ceremony On The Hollywood Walk of Fame. Check it out.
WEDNESDAY 11th SUPERMAN ORIGINAL AUDIO - ANOTHER BLUNDER? Scott Bosco has alerted me to his webpage, where he explains that the original audio mix is incorrectly represented on the DVD! Now, I've only sampled a scene or two since getting my replacement; what bothered me was the sound level, it's quite low, I had to pump up the volume to get any satisfaction. I much prefer the sound f/x of the original, but there are moments in the 5.1 that work too. On this corrected version dialog is shared amongst the front three speaker locations. But more horrible is that it leaks into the surround creating a slight echo effect. It was never mixed that way except an effect with Marlon Brandos disembodied voice as Jor-el. This is sloppy mishandling which dates back to the early 80s when studios didnt care or fully know how to properly transfers stereo films to the home video market.
SATURDAY 7th ILYA SALKIND RETURNS Ilya wanted to touch base with everyone -- he's been busy moving to his new home and working on his big feature, The Nautilus, which is looking very promising. I'm sure you are aware that Ilya is a huge Jules Verne fan, so this is a dream project for him. The recent auction went very well, the costume went for big bucks, as did everything else. More items might be available from his archive later. One of the reasons he's selling off his Superman archive is to move on -- leave the past behind and move on to his twilight years with renewed vigour. Further interviews are planned, but not for a while; I think we're all a bit tired of talking about the blueboy. Anyway, Ilya sends big hugs to everyone.
ULTIMATE BOXSET RETURNS When Warner Home Video's (WHV) The Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition (Superman UCE) was released last November, consumer receptivity was completely unprecedented, resulting in WHV selling its total supply of collections in one month. The Superman UCE was lauded by the nation's critics and made many top ten lists, year-end round-ups and magazine gift guide suggestions. The title also won top honors as Catalog DVD of the Year at the Digital Entertainment Group's Creative Excellence Awards. Now on May 29, The Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition will again be available by popular demand, in a limited edition, at $99.92 SRP. The re-released Superman UCE will include the corrected discs for Superman III and Superman: The Movie, which were missing bonus content upon their release last fall. When the inadvertent omission was discovered, replacement discs were made available to initial UCE buyers. Replacement discs from the first release of the UCE can still be obtained, at no cost to the consumer, by calling 800-553-6937. The Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition includes all six films in the Superman theatrical franchise - Superman Returns Special Edition, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition, Superman II Two Disc Special Edition, Superman III & IV Deluxe Editions -- and is loaded with more than 20 hours of bonus features. Three bonus discs include Look Up in the Sky! The Amazing Story of Superman and exclusive to the collection, You Will Believe: The Cinematic Saga of Superman, a feature length documentary, plus Bryan Singer's video journals chronicling the making of Superman Returns. The 14-disc set will be packaged in a collectible keepsake tin and holds the set within lenticular packaging, along with a reproduction of the comic book Superman issue #7 and a Superman overview booklet. Consumers can also send in a mail-in offer for five limited edition Superman theatrical movie posters through March 2008.
