TUESDAY 5TH SUPERMAN THE MOVIE DVD UK - DISC IS NOT DEFECTIVE A number of people in the U.K. are calling Warners not fully understanding the situation. Some are calling thinking the disc is defective, it is NOT! The problem is that the original audio is missing. The 2.0 track is the 2001 audio mix not the 1978 soundtrack. Warners have told me that some people are calling complaining about a defect but when they are told it's simply that the original 1978 audio isn't on the disc, they are not bothered. You should be bothered, the original soundtrack is important because that's what people heard more or less in 1978 and subsequent Television and Video releases up to 2001. The original sound was nominated for an Oscar and BAFTA (U.K. version of the Oscar ceremony). Even the producer isn't happy about the 2001 5.1 audio, he much prefers the original audio track. To be fair to Warners U.K. they never advertised the original audio so I'm grateful that they'll issue replacements.
SUNDAY 3rd SUPERMAN THE MOVIE - BAD TRANSFER ISSUE DEBUNKED! As soon as I posted the bad transfer issue, I was alerted by a source who came up with an explanation, this is his interpretation. Here's the original image provided via proxy:
A compression test was done on the contrast to prove that either the person's player or TV was incorrectly set-up i.e. it was attempting to enhance the picture or that the transfer has actually been improved on the 2006 expanded image. Will come to the theatrical cut image in a moment.
The middle image is correctly balanced in terms of colour timing. Notice the blooming in the middle cloud on image 1 and 3? The player is enhancing that image or playing a digital trick when it shouldn't! Another test:
Notice the correct balance in the middle image? Correct contrast! Now here's a screenshot on the player's default settings using the compression contrast test:
And here's the actual image with no tests:
Looks like the source has debunked the myth that the transfer on the 2006 expanded image was done incorrectly. The source thinks that the image may have been upscaled on this person's player which automatically shoots the contrast higher. So what about the theatrical cut on the disc? Well, it was cut from the 2001 transfer and the source isn't 100% sure why! Thanks to Jim Bowers for sending in the original image from one of his readers.
SUPERMAN II - MAKING OF - NTSC PROBLEMS Another problem has surfaced which affects all Region ONE, MAYBE Region TWO JAPAN and MAYBE Region THREE discs: Hey, first off let me say I love your site, and your updates on the problems with the Ultimate edition have been helpful. In fact I've noticed something else, let me know what you think. Iwas watching the Superman II bonus features, and although i already have a copy of the TV making of Superman II, I thought I would watch it, and immediately I noticed it was different. It seems to move slower, the images on the screen seem almost blurry and have a stuttered look to them, and the narrarators voice sounds deeper and slower too. I have two different copies of the TV making of Superman II, prior to the Ultimate set's release, and they both appear fine. Let me know what you think. Thanks for your time, and keep up the great work. I believe this does NOT affect PAL regions; I've just tested it on mine and it works just fine. I think it's a conversion issue which was apparent on the test discs, I'm surprised that it was missed!. I'll bring it to Warner's attention. What the hell is PAL and NTSC? Click Here
