CHECK YOUR STM DISC!

Ryan says:

I bought the Ultimate Edition set via Amazon.com back when it came out. I called the 800 number right after Christmas. A week later I got the letter from WB and the stamped dvd envelope. I received my replacement discs a week later in the mail. I was pleased with the turnaround. The Superman III disc was the corrected version, HOWEVER... my Superman I replacement disc was THE SAME BAD DISC with the 2001 audio on it. I checked it a few times during various scenes and it does not contain the 78 mix. I now have to call WB back and explain the situation. Just wanted to warn everyone out there to make sure they check their discs!

IRISH SCREENING OF STM?

A few of us [Irish boys] are trying to sort out a screening of STM in Belfast. Sadly we are short on numbers. This is a flyer I have put together for it, I plan to put it up around comic shops in Belfast. Anyone wanting to go should email paulrod@tiscali.co.uk

SUPERMAN REBORN ACTUALLY IT'S SUPERMAN: THE NEW MOVIE

I spoke with Ilya yesterday; he’s busy with various projects so we haven’t done the Superman III interview yet. I guess it gives me an opportunity to endure Superman III again before writing the questions. :)

We did talk about his proposed Superman 1 and 2 supercut with Donner which he initiated with Dick back in 1997, but was shot down by Terry Semel, who liked the idea but wasn’t prepared to let it conflict with the new picture they were developing! The impression Ilya gave was that it was suppose to be a 4 hr epic, although, I’m inclined to think it was more like 4 and half hours. There were discussions between Dick, his wife and Ilya about it. This leads me on to another project which was shot down by Warner Bros in the early nineties, Superman Reborn. I managed to grab a copy from a blind news vendor recently. Unfortunately, I can’t make it available to anyone for various legal reasons but I hope to write a review of it very soon.

I like the ideas presented here: Brainiac encapsulates Metropolis, leaving the city in a suffocating time bomb; Brainiac nearly defeats Superman but is saved in time by another encapsulated city, Kandor; Lois and Brainiac [in human form] love story; Superman’s escapades in Kandor juxtaposed with the love story with Brainiac and Lois; Superman and Brainiac battle on a planet.

There’s some visually interesting concepts but it’s not perfect, I’d say it’s about 60% there but according to Ilya, the script was an early draft anyway, and Christopher Reeve really wanted to do it. There’s no Kryptonite or Lex Luthor. The story is aimed more at the comic book and sci-fi fan which probably would alienate the general audience but it’s much better than 3, 4 and Returns in my opinion. There’s enough good material here that makes it a worthy addition to the series, returning substance and genuine emotion in the style of Dick and Tom.

It’s a real shame that Cary Bates didn’t fulfill this ambition because he clearly has the talent for screenwriting which could be nurtured.

We have a screening of Superman: The Movie coming that I want you and everybody else to know about. Details:
Cineworld Cinemas Ipswich, Tuesday, January 23rd, 8:30pm.

I'm hyped about this. It's part of our "Screen Legends" season for January and Christopher Reeve is the legend for the 23rd. I believe this is the original theatrical cut as I think we've discussed before that Warner haven't licensed the expanded cut for UK exhibition (unless this has changed). Anyway, I'd like to confirm the date and time with you a week before the screening just to remind everybody - tickets will be available to pre-book about 1 - 2 weeks prior to the 23rd.

SATURDAY 13th

STM DISC REPLACEMENTS REGION 1

A quick (and final) update about the Superman replacement discs in the US.

Today I received both replacement DVDs from Warner Home Video, only ten business days after I placed the originals in the mail. I've verified that
"Superman: Special Edition" Disc 1 now contains the original theatrical soundtrack, using the audio samples available on your site. I've also
verified that the "Superman III: Deluxe Edition" now contains the previously missing bonus material. They did a terrific job correcting the mistakes so
quickly, the mark of true customer service.

Thanks to your site for letting fans like me know about this issue and keeping us informed.

Marcel says:

I finally received my Superman Movie and Superman III Replacement Disc for the Ultimate Collection Set. What can I say? Are you impressed with the Deleted Scenes on the new Superman III disc? Anybody who has seen the full version that was on TBS in the early 90's knows there are about 15 more Deleted Scenes not put into the disc. Extended Bowling Scene for example. I was even hoping to see Clark & Lacey dancing at the club in Part IV but that wasn't included. There is still so much more missing from all 4 movies, but I guess this is all we are going to get from Warner Bros for a very long time.

and Simon says:

I don't know if you're aware of this but I recieved the Region 1 Superman UC DVD set for christmas. I have a multi region player but I've just purchased a new DVD recorder which plays region 2 only. Anyway I thought i'd just try them to see if they worked and some of them did! STM discs 1-4,
S2 discs 1-3 & S4 all played on this player. The rest of them wouldn't which included S3 (Which is the incorrect version) Just wondering if anyone else has come across this?

What do you of the original audio? Sound good?

MONDAY 1st

MICHAEL THAU INTERVIEW

We just rolled up our sleeves and started going through it. We did have paperwork that came from the cutting rooms so we had a pretty accurate roadmap of what Dick shot and what he didn’t shoot. It took me a while to get through it with my assistant editor Karen Rasch. It was pretty well organized, but no one at Warner Bros had gone through it thoroughly. When I was going through the paperwork I was just started out with a little smile and it got bigger then bigger until I was grinning ear to ear. The real challenge was digging through an enormous amount of negative. I didn’t do it myself but I had four people at the Warner Bros negative vault going through it and it took a long time to locate the exact piece of negative that I was looking for.
