Total is 30m 32s

Please Note: APPLIES to U.K. and other PAL video formats. When a film is transferred to video the running time will be shorter by approximately 4% due to the differing number of frames per second. This does not mean that the video version has been cut or re-edited.

Is the Nuclear Man one fight included? If it is, it seems awfully short judging by those times considering that there must be bookend material i.e. set-up and conclusion to the scenes, let's wait and see.

SUPERMAN II DELETED SCENES ARE...

The BBFC have listed the Donner scenes NOT in the final cut but will be available in the supplementary section:

Total: 8m 33s

Also, SUPERMAN BOX SET - DVD - HEART OF A HERO: A TRIBUTE TO CHRISTOPHER REEVE runs for 17 min.

Not sure I can survive another 2 months, the curiosity is killing me. The 14 disc set announcement is imminent, no exact date but should before the month's end. Hold on to your hats.

>>FRIDAY 15th

THE REGION 4 DVD ANNOUNCEMENT

The R4 (Australia) has been announced, I think...I say I think because the image of the box displays 14 discs not 13, which is the number of discs in the international sets. Anyway, in the annoucement there are some interesting additions, this maybe erroneous:

Superman IV deluxe edition

* Commentary by screenwriters Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal
* Superman IV The Missing Scenes featurette that examines and recreates the original tested version

Maybe the R1 version will have the above commentary by both writers and the featurette included -- It wasn't announced by the studio as a featurette but as additional scenes for the R1 and R2 releases. Maybe it's the same thing? My head hurts.

Here's the contents of the documentary disc --- exclusive to the 13/14 disc set:

You Will Believe - The Making of a Saga: All-new six-part documentary about the original theatrical franchise.

Forging the Man of Steel - Superman in the media, and the challenges the Salkinds faced
Creating the Vision - creating the right script, choosing the right director and casting the right actors
Believe - the production and launch of a new kind of fantasy film
Crisis - complications and conflicts between the creative forces behind Superman II
Downfall - criticisms and burnout of Superman III and Superman IV
Legacy - filmmakers, writers and artists reflect

Also exclusive to the Ultimate Set:

* Collectible Tin Set with bellyband
* Transparent plastic O-Ring packaging with lenticular tips
* Foil-enhanced box
* Chapter Booklet
* DC Comics Booklet
* One-Sheet Mail-In Coupon
* Bonus New Documentaries (The Mythology of Superman, The Science of Superman, Remembering Christopher Reeve)

The complete announcement here.

That leaves the mysterious 14th disc for U.S. and Canada to be announced.

The original audio for the theatrical cut of the STM has not been announced but I was assured it will be on there -- I'll be double checking because I know how important it is to a lot of fans.

And finally, a source chimed in with a rumour, Helen Slater has been interviewed for the DVD documentary.

CHICAGO STM REVIEW

Gökhan Ersan:

I saw Superman at Chicago's Musicbox last Saturday night, and although this is a bit late I would like to share my opinions with Superman Cinema readers:

I am a visual communication instructor. I saw “Superman: the Movie” at the Musicbox theater in Chicago last Saturday. I have seen the movie four
times in the past: the original theatrical release in 1979 when I was nine years old; a theatrical re-release in 1984 from a beat up print and the three
hour cut in 1986. The passage of time has provided a good critical distance to assess whether the film succeeds in communicating its premise convincingly.
This viewing reaffirmed my opinion of “Superman: the movie” in many perspectives. 28 years later, Superman stands as a timeless narrative. The movie’s story arc, dialogue, visual imagination (Krypton, Smallville, Daily Planet, even Luthor’s lair!) and its effortless acting make it transcend the mannerisms of
its era (the late 1970s). The human condition the film portrays still thrills the viewer like all timeless works of art does. For me Superman is not simply a
strong man who can fly above the skyline, but a concept who lives with “the starry night above him and the moral law within” (as Kant postulated for the
ultimate human subject).

In particular, first and the second acts are flawless in establishing the Superman concept: Krypton is highly conceptualized and impeccably executed;
Smallville (from baby Kal-el lifting the truck to Clark hitting the football) feels like uncanny documentary footage of recent history. In the third act there are many moments that bring myth to life in ones imagination. The helicopter rescue sequence; the airforce one rescue; the long
sequence where Clark travels to Luthor’s lair; the train rescue; Superman’s flight inside the fault; Lois’s death; and Superman’s dart into the earth’s
orbit are scenes executed so remarkably that the film continue to feel like a documentary of the myth!

I felt, however, after last weekend’s viewing that most other flying scenes in the third act undeservedly hurt the experience of Superman—including Superman’s flight with Lois before a front projection. Because, I think this film deserves to be fully enjoyed by future generations of viewers I wish somebody places the effort to restore those scenes to communicate their ideal concept more closely (almost all blue screen composites and the front projection flight scenes where Superman is not perfectly synchronized with the background). Some new technological help would not hurt in my opinion.

Overall, “Superman: the Movie” passed the test of time for me and the movie has joined those few that will endure forever.

DAVID AND LESLIE NEWMAN 1986 INTERVIEW

Edward Gross:

I've posted the first part of an audio interview that I conducted with David and Leslie Newman about 20 years ago. In the conversation they discuss the writing of the first three Christopher Reeve films and David also discusses his work co-writing the Broadway show. The interview is located on the Voices From Krypton page at www.mediageekplace.com.

RICHARD DONNER'S SUPERMAN III - EDITED 14/9/06

Did Dick Donner have plans for Superman III? Well he did and you can read the Action comic book based on his ideas for the third picture from October 25th. It's written by Geoff Johns (A very nice person, I remember talking to him before he and Dick sat down to watch the 3hr cut of Superman back in 2000, gosh - doesn't time fly) and Richard Donner, the story is slated to be their second addition in the series. Details here.

STM BIG SCREEN REVIEWS

Steve Sarver had an unique opportunity to see STM on the big screen, here's his review:

I saw Superman (the Movie) in Chicago last night/early this morning; it was the midnight showing at the Music Box Theatre. Several years ago I contacted the theatre to see if they would show this movie (they frequently show movies from years past). I specifically asked if they could show the 70mm copy. They responded that they would love to but they did not have the rights.

They showed the special edition movie, which was on the 2001 DVD. The rather light crowd of about 50 people cheered at quite a few moments in the credits, especially when the names of the big four were shown (Brando, Hackman, Reeve, Kidder). Richard Donner and John Williams also got some loud cheers. There was laughter at all the right times ("Otisburg? Otisburg?")

While I disagreed with the changes to the sounds effects when the DVD was released, I have to say that, when viewing the movie on the big screen, I actually enjoyed the sounds very much. Unfortunately it was not a surround sound theatre, but it is certainly clear that the new sounds would be outstanding in such an environment.

I have seen this movie well over 100 times and it is my all-time favorite. However this is the first time I have seen it on the big screen as I was too young when it was originally released. The large-screen format further illustrates not only how great this movie truly is...the music, the acting, the effects, and, last but certainly not least, the script and direction. It has certainly whet my appetite for the Donner cut of Superman II. And wouldn't it be nice if the folks at the Music Box Theatre broadcast that on the big screen someday!

And here's another. BTW, you New Yorkers, don't miss Superman at the great, Zeigfield theatre this month.

>>SUNDAY 10th

THE SALKIND SUPERMAN 2 INTERVIEW - DELAYED

Unfortunately, the Superman II interview with Ilya Salkind is taking longer than expected, the main reason for the delay is that he wants to be as accurate as possible; it was a muddled and complex time so dates are particulary important for contextual reasons. What I've got so far is thought-provoking, an interesting insight into the politics of the business. Let's see how this one pans out. Apologies for the delay.

NEW LINK FOR THE DVD TRAILER

Warner Bros. have forced YouTube to remove the trailer; you can watch it at its official address here

>>THURSDAY 7th

TEARS OF JOY

I was thinking, 5 years ago, a guy handed my letter of thanks to Donner, included in the adulations was a request, a petition to see his footage released. I never thought the day would come when I'd actually see Marlon Brando in Superman II, well today I have, even though it was a glimpse, it blew me away -- the main course is on its way. If you haven't already seen it, stop reading and click here to see the DVD trailer on youtube.

DVD COVER ART

I'm in the midst of updating the DVD pages. I must say that I wish they'd used the original theatrical poster designs. I found this design at the hometheaterforum, even though it's probably fanmade, doesn't it look amazing? Replace the 'S' with the title and viola. It's so simple and elegant, we need the likes of Bob Peak type designs back at the forefront of theatrical and home video marketing.

>>TUESDAY 5th

YOU'LL BELIEVE IN THE MYTH

Consider this a rumour, the documentary featuring newly recorded interviews will cover all the Super Salkind pictures including Supergirl. This documentary disc is only available in the Ultimate Edition set. I know a number of Supergirl fans were disappointed with the lack of features on the one disc standalone product, but maybe some of your dreams will come true in this documentary ;)

>>SUNDAY 3rd

A BETTER LOOK AT THE ULTIMATE EDITION PACKAGING

Thanks to Yaniv, here's another look at the proposed design. I believe these are leaked images. I can't imagine the final version being radically different, though. I must congratulate WB and Jim Bowers, I really like this design, bravo :) What is that Richard Donner disc? More questions than answers...! :)

>>FRIDAY 1st

COVER ART REVEALED...?

Looks like Jim Bower's handy work:

[removed]

This is the Spanish version, a 13 disc set. Interesting to note, there's one disc titled: You will believe in the Myth. This must be the documentary covering all the Reeve pictures. Click here to see the page of origin.

If this is the final design, let me say that it looks amazing and it bears all the hallmarks of Jim Bowers, a very talented designer.
