DVD REVIEW ROUND-UP

2 weeks today, you'll be able to hold a Superman DVD, can you believe it???

Obviously, the biggest Superman website doesn't get a review copy, I can't review this disc until early May.
There are plenty of reviews on the net, some are good and some are bad. The one's I've read:

DVDFILE - No one can beat this review, terrific, must read.
The Digital Bits - Good review tarnished by the words 'dated effects'.
WidescreenReview.com - Good review, but nothing on the extras.
The Big Picture DVD - Lacklustre, terribly boring.
Aint It Cool News - Terrible review.
Home Theater Forum - Good review.
Superman Web Central - Good.
DVD Authority - Average, another lousy comment about dated effects.

DVD REVIEW AT THE DIGITAL BITS

Yet another review saying that some f/x have dated. Special Effects don't date, bad f/x will always look bad, and good f/x will always look good.

SUPER SEQUELS SOUND ISSUE

A fan has told me that Warner Bros. have confirmed that the audio on the sequels will Dolby Digital 2.0
This is extremely disappointing.
If Supergirl can get 5.1 surround sound, then Warner Bros. should've done the same with Superman films.

Superman2 sound has always been disappointing to me, infact, it's terrible. It really requires some audio work, obviously faithful to the original theatrical mix.

SAN ANTONIO LOVED SUPERMAN THE MOVIE BUT NO NATIONWIDE RELEASE

Having test screenings in San Antonio would never get the attention thanks to Warner Bros. They should be ashamed of themselves. If Superman was shown in a few theaters in the larger cities, WB would be gleaming with delight right now, because the gross figures would've been much higher.

The turn-out in San Antonio so far has been disappointing, the film will play until this weekend, but it's all over, no nationwide re-release. It's all Warner Bros' fault!!!!

Here's a quote from my excellent source:
"Results of after screening surveys were overwhelmingly positive, with those rating it an A- or better in the 90% range. It appealed equally to children and adults."

Did WB want this to fail, if yes, WHY? Or, was it just bad marketing. I think it's bad marketing - wrong location and wrong weekend, lack of consultation etcetc. "You'll believe Warner Bros couldn't organise a p*ss-up in a brewery"

It's official, Superman will be on DVD in 4 weeks! The press release has been issued

WHY SAN ANTONIO?

Here's why San Antonio was chosen:

By René A. Guzman
San Antonio Express-News

The Alamo may not be the Fortress of Solitude, but it'll more than do for Superman. "Superman: The Movie," the 1978 film that made Christopher Reeve a superstar, soars back to the big screen today for an exclusive showing at 10 local theaters. The remastered, redigitized "Superman" now boasts an unedited print clocking in at just more than three hours. And neither Gotham, N.Y., nor Metropolis, Ill., will do for the Man of Steel. "Superman" distributor Warner Bros. singled out San Antonio on account of what it called the city's "true cross section of America." If the local showing yields big numbers, expect an expanded re-release in the weeks to come.

"It's because (San Antonio) is a good microcosm for the United States," says Michael Thau producer of the restored "Superman." "It has a good proportion of blacks, Hispanics and parents with children at the right ages to see the film. And testing it in one city saves a lot of money. The proximity of a particular Internet site might have something to do with it, too." That site would likely be Ain't-It-Cool-News.com out of Austin. Like many Net
sites, AICN has been pounding its mouse pads for a Superman re-release for several years now. Thau noted that Warner Bros. had screened "The Exorcist" re-release in Austin after similar fan fervor on the Web.

But if you'll indulge one more "super" superlative, it took a Texas super-fan besides AICN creator Harry Knowles to help get "Superman" back on the movie reel.

Tim Gardner, an avid Superman collector in Corpus Christi, worked extensively with Warner Bros. and director Richard Donner's office to promote the movie's reissue. As marketing director for KryptonKollectables.com  , Gardner contacted Web sites and fan clubs across the globe. Gardner hopes moviegoers will rediscover the Superman magic he first enjoyed back in his wide-eyed youth more than 20 years ago.

"I've been a Superman fan since I was 2 or 3," he says. "I have pictures in (Superman) pajamas. Grandma made me enough Superman cakes to supply a legion of superheroes."

And now he offers just about every Superman doodad under the sun at his own Web site, KryptonKollectables.com. Some of Gardner's goodies include one of Reeve's Superman costumes, original artwork from Superman co-creator Joe Shuster, Superman telephones and a 7-foot Superman statue.
So what drives Superman acolytes such as Gardner into such passion? "It's the nobility of Superman," he says. "What we should be as people, Superman is. The ability to be able to fly — that's the ability to get over boundaries and soar past indifferences. There are a lot of analogies to Superman." One of the most important analogies for Gardner, and Superman fans the world over, is simply losing oneself in a fun comic book adventure.

"This is a chance to relive that magic," says Gardner. "You'll believe a man can fly again."
raguzman@express-news.net

No mention of Superman CINEMA or Web Central. AICN HAS NOT been petitioning for a re-release, they only joined in recently.

Thanks to William for the heads-up.

SUPERMAN SE THEATRICAL PLANS NOT SCRAPPED????

Make up your own minds about the following. BTW, the source is good, this person hopes to have more info:

He told me that the word around there is that WB has not scrapped the re-release but has in fact, due to overwhelming fan response, pushed off the DVD/VHS releases until a much later date to accomodate for a larger scale wide theatrical release window. WB didn't expect such a push by the fan community for theatrical release. He said everyone around there is subtly trying to rush out promotional materials, throw together posters, book theaters, things like that. It seems as if WB wants everyone to think they had this in mind the whole time. Evidently there's a small group of people with WB scouring the internet daily trying to quell any speculation that they're going to kill the re-release and, my assumation, anything that hits too close to the truth, generally "taking exception" with any article that even suggests that they made a mistake or are killing the re-release (like this article). Anyway, I'll try to get more confirmation on this and keep ya posted on what develops, if we can find anything out.

I WANT TO BELIEVE!

SUPERMAN SE THEATRICAL NEWSPAPER AD!

Have they really scrapped the wide theatrical plans? The boneheads at WB haven't confirmed or denied. Can these people organise a p*ss up a the brewery? I can confirm they can't. Make up your own mind:

SUPERMAN RE-RELEASE TRAILER

After viewing the trailer a few times, I must admit that the picture quality looks stunning, it's now correctly colour-timed (Unsworth never had time to do this in 1978). The picture looks vibrant, the pastel effect is much more prominent, Unsworth was a genius, as was Alex Thompson. Thanks to our f/x friend, Ahem - he was right, Superman's f/x look even more amazing, the grainy, fuzzy shots now look much sharper thanks to the digital restoration. The guys who worked on the film have done a fantastic job on the picture. Thanks for not going down the CGI route.

Now, the sound is more contentious issue, what I heard in the trailer was amazing, I can't help but like it. It will certainly give Dolby Digital amps a good work-out.  Until I hear this sound mix in Dolby Digital I can't comment, but I like what I heard.

DVD PUSHED BACK????

What's wrong with Warner Bros.? Their literature states that the DVDs will be out on 1st May, then they say that it's not set in stone. Looks like WB are giving the re-release a chance to succeed, but I think it's all a bit too late, quite frankly, this re-release should've been done in February. Sort yourselves out, Warner Bros.!!!!

IN THEATERS FOR 2 WEEKS???

Jim Bowers:
This just in. I have confirmed that WB plans to play Superman in San Antonio theaters for at least two weeks, starting March 23, then depending on grosses, it will determine how long it stays in theaters. I strongly recommend that fans still try to attend opening weekend just to be safe. I am trying to confirm the complete list of theaters it will be playing in.
I also hope to show the trailer and screen tests while I'm in S.A. for all of the fans who contact me there.

14th MARCH 2001

FANS MEET-UP!!!

Jim Bowers would love to meet you guys in San Antonio, so if you are going, why not hook up? Here are the details:

I will be arriving in San Antonio on Thursday, March 22, in the early afternoon, and departing Sunday morning, March 25. I will be staying with fellow Superman fan Tim Gardner at a Sleep Inn hotel. Tim is our Texas contact who has been instrumental in promoting Superman-The Movie Special Edition and staying in contact with the local WB rep in charge of the press screening and weekend preview. Thanks Tim!

We'd like as many fans as possible to join us all weekend to see the film at various theaters throughout the city. We will be attending the first show at noon at the Regal Alamo Quarry 14 (210.333.3456) at 255 East Basse Road in S.A. We plan to see the film at least 2 more times before Sunday. There will be a Superman dinner on Friday evening at a location to be determined.

You can call our hotel room (Ask for Jim Bowers) at:

Sleep Inn
8318 Interstate 10 West
San Antonio, TX
210.344.5400

See you in San Antonio! Don't forget to bring your camera and wear your favorite Superman shirts!

Are fans having trouble getting tickets, some theaters do not even know about the screening!!! This fan e-mailed me:
Hi there.  I tried several of the theaters in San Antonio.  One of the AMC's had a recording that when it asked for me to enter in the name of the movie I wanted to purchase tickets for in advance, I did, and it said "A systems error has occurred."  Then I tried two of the Regals, one of the people said they didn't know about that film yet and the other said that they won't have any info on that film the Thursday before it opens and that I could only purchase tickets in advance TWO DAYS prior to its release.  I haven't tried any others because I got discouraged and I don't have a good long distance plan on my phone.  I wonder if anyone else is having this problem.  They're probably getting swamped with calls right about now.
