SUPERMAN THE MOVIE- THE SCRIPTS 1974/1975 Mario Puzo excepted the job, he turned in 2 drafts for both
Superman 1 and 2, after which, he was exhausted and declined any further
major involvement. He did visit the sets and might have been involved
in shaping the script for a day or 2 on set in 1977.
Before Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz made revisions
to this version, Guy Hamilton was to direct. Guy Hamilton dropped out
because Production moved from Italy to England, and he couldn't shoot
in England because of tax reasons. The Newmans worked with Robert Benton,
he was involved with the first film's script for a short while before
moving onto his own projects.
The Writer's guild rule allows only 4 writers to be credited,
hence Tom Mankiewicz has Creative Consultant credit. Tom and Donner revised
the screenplay. This script is dated April, but revisions began in late
1976. Further revisions throughout the early part of production. Donner
would've ideally wanted more time to shape the script but there was very
little time, production had to move very quickley.
