THE SOUNDTRACK RELEASES: ORIGINAL DOUBLE LP/JAPANESE CD/REGULAR SINGLE
CD
This great score is very underrated, when you think of John
Williams you instantly think of Star Wars and Indy. Unfortunately this
little gem doesn't get the recognition it deserves. After Empire Strikes
Back this score is my 2nd favourite. Williams doesn't create one decent
theme, each one has its own merits.
The score is perfect and
not just the main theme which is the best piece of music Williams has
ever written for a credit sequence. I have heard many pieces of main title
music but the Superman theme is the most powerful.
I just haven't heard any main theme which can touch Superman or it's epic
feel of adventure. Star Wars is very close, but this theme has some great
features which make me jump out of my seat. Although I prefer the movie
version, the main theme is obviously the best track on the album. The
theme can be best described as a ride and paints a picture of the whole
film. If you sit down and think about it you will agree it takes you on
an entertaining and exhilarating ride.
Planet Krypton is a much darker piece which is also perfect
and a big favourite of mine. It depicts the villainous evil trio very
well. The best part comes when the dome opens, Williams music brings it
alive, the feeling of a mysterious void. Reminds me of 2001.
Destruction of Krypton isn't the full version, most of it is heard in
the expanded version of the film. Williams brings the feeling of the last
son of Krypton. When the father gives his farewell speech, the music here
is perfect. It brings out the emotions of the father and mother. Unfortunately
the finale of the track isn't used in the theatrical cut of the film so
I can't compare.
The Superman love theme is superb and so effective. I consider it to be
the best love theme ever composed. It begins gently and takes us on a
romantic ride. You do hear an edited version on the end credits of Superman.
Leaving Home is rather moving piece again flawless. It begins mysteriously
and fits the scenes perfectly. The whole track is beautifully composed
and sounds even better on it's own.
Fortress of Solitude is a lovely melody taking us on journey through time
and space ending with a snippet of the great main theme.
The flying sequence is a superb variation of the love theme, it's much
stronger and plays beautifully. Once Margot Kidder recites "Can You
Read My Mind" the track loses it's great feeling. Unfortunately I
have to stop the track before she performs the words.
I am a little disappointed with Super Rescues because the track isn't
in order, but still very good, painting a picture of heroics.
Superfeats is superb, one of my favourite pieces of action music. The
feeling of urgency is definitely felt. The music is very listenable on
it's own and the finale of the track is great. Watch the scene where Superman
swoops down just before he creates a dam. Listen to the music that accompanies
that scene, It's sooooo PERFECT!
The March of The Villains is very good, It really points out the campiness
of the naughty trio. Chasing Rockets is another action piece starting
off slowly and finishing off gently.
The End title takes some cues from the love theme and the main title march
returns. I love the build up to the march as the sun appears on the horizon.
A truly remarkable soundtrack one which is very high on many fans expanded
re-issue wish list. I am a little disappointed that Growing Up and Luthor's
Lair were omitted on the CD release. This decision baffles me but forget
that minor problem this is a must for any film music fan. If and when
RHINO release the expanded soundtrack it will be a winner. The CD may
sound a little muffled but it doesn't really effect your listening pleasure
unless your a professional audio expert.
