Like the TV premiere of Superman The Movie, the sequel's
first showing on ABC included footage never seen before. There have been
various cuts of Superman 2 shown around the world during the 1980s. Majority
have been the theatrical edition which we are use to, and it is this cut
that has been shown on TV since 1990 when the rights reverted back to
Warner Bros.
The extended cuts feature an extra 20%-25% of Donner footage.
Very little Lester footage was added to any of the broadcasts. This page
features all the extended footage shown on various TV
networks.
For a complete breakdown of what footage was shown during
the various TV networks around the world - CLICK

be used in the first picture, see the end credits of STM, the pilots
are listed there - DONNER FOOTAGE

- Additional dialogue between Clark and Lois at the Planet. LESTER

- An expanded and alternate version of Lex Luthor making his plans
to use his "black box" to track down Superman's "secret"

- The tail end of Zod & co. on the moon has been expanded as Zod
tells Ursa, "You will have everything you want..." , to which
Ursa replies, "Men...to kill!" Zod's closing line is "...and
I to lead!" - DONNER FOOTAGE
- There's some REALLY funny dialogue while Lex and Otis attempt to
escape the prison. They are hiding behind a wall, you can hear someone
whisper overhead.) Lex says to Otis "Naw, I took care of that before
we left - "Psst!" (obviously Ms. Teschmacher in her balloon)
"Not that 'Psst'! THAT 'Psst'!" (a funny urination joke) Lex:
"No! "Did you go 'Psst' ?" the video version continue
this joke!! - DONNER FOOTAGE
- More dialogue between Luthor and Teschmacher in the hot air balloon.-
DONNER FOOTAGE
- A little shot of Clark poking a dollar on a tooth stick as he takes
the hot dogs. LESTER FOOTAGE

- An alternate version of the scene where Lex and Eve enter the Fortress
of Solitude: the two snowspeed to its entrance as Eve says to Lex, "Snow...your
idea of a good time?" Lex replies, "That's his home, that's
his home!" - DONNER
FOOTAGE

- We then see Lex and Eve in the water with the snow mobile travelling
towards the Fortress. This scene is beautifully filmed and lasts
about a minute. There is no dialogue, only music, and the sound of the
snow mobile travelling on water. - DONNER
FOOTAGE
- Lex and Eve arrive at the entrance of the Fortress. They attempt
to find a way in. Includes dialogue. - DONNER
FOOTAGE
- Extra dialogue in the Fortress, Eve finds a toilet, we don't see
this because the whole time, the camera is on Luthor. Just about all
the dialogue which is overheard on the scene where the duo leave on
the snowspeed is spoken by Lex in the Fortress - DONNER
FOOTAGE
- Lex and Eve exit the Fortress. Eve is hinting marriage. Lex is scheming,
he wants the Krypton villains to work for him. Create more land for
him, continung the real estate idea into this one. Lex figures
out that the XK101 rocket set the villains free! DONNER
FOOTAGE
- Before Lois and Clark check into the honeymoon hotel, there is about
40 seconds of shots of some tourists outside the hotel, taking pictures.
The tourists appear to be mainly Japanese. There is also some ariel
shots of Niagara Falls. LESTER
FOOTAGE
- A man of about 50 with a portable film camera, only to discover he
has accidentally destroyed the film.
LESTER FOOTAGE
- After Non gives the red siren to Zod the deputy sneaks around the
back of the car and he runs into Ursa's waist. He then stands up straight
and tips his hat to her.LESTER
FOOTAGE
- In the second East Houston scene, we see more of the villains' destruction
of the town, especially Non's participation.LESTER
FOOTAGE
- The first sequence is of a woman viewing a football game, only to
have it interrupted by a newsflash concerning the villians destruction
of Houston, Idaho.LESTER FOOTAGE
-
The second sequence is of a Japanese father and daughter at home.
The father is cutting fish:
Father: I am so tired of all this violence on television.
You should not watch that.
Daughter: Shut up Dad!LESTER
FOOTAGE
- Superman is talking to Lois. They appear to be talking about sex.
Superman: (nervously) "I've never done this before." Lois:
"It's okay. I'm here, everything will be all right."; the
scene opens up to reveal:
Superman making a soufflé using his heat vision in the Fortress of Solitude,
Lois says "Okay, that's enough." and Superman stops heating
the souffle. Lois "Never overcook a soufflé". LESTER
FOOTAGE

- After the boy says to Zod "Please Mr General, let my daddy down!"
and Zod drops the boy's father, the video version has a reaction shot
of the boy, that's it. In the ABC version, there is no reaction shot.
Instead, it shows the boy running to a white horse. The boy gets on
his horse and rides away, saying "We'll get some help!" Zod
is talking to the townspeople about how he is their ruler and says "No
one is to leave this town!" Then he sees the boy riding off (very
far away). He says quietly "I said 'no one'." Zod looks at
Non, who throws the police light (that he ripped off the patrol car
earlier) at the horse. There is a whistling sound as the light is thrown
(sounds like a missle), then there is an explosion of dust, then silence...
the boy and the horse have obviously been killed. A tearful woman screams
"He was only a boy!" Ursa grins and says "Who will never
become a man." - LESTER
FOOTAGE
- More scenes have been added to the first White House scene, including:
a) A sniffling dog trying to find the villains.
b) A Secret Service agent making a phone call assuring the President's
safety ony to be surprised by gunfire.
c) We get to see Zod using a gun.

d) We also get to see Ursa mince words with the agents protecting the
President.
DONNER FOOTAGE
- After Lois has told Superman that she has to "change into
something a little more comfortable". She is seen in what appears
to be a fortress room. We see her reach into her handbag and pull out
a silk dress. She is later seen wearing it during the scene that Superman
loses his powers. Ever wondered where she got the dress from? LESTER
FOOTAGE
- An ariel shot has been added to the scene where Lois & Clark
are travelling on the road after Clark loses his powers. DONNER
FOOTAGE
- An extended shot of Clark travelling by foot to the Fortress after
being beat up at the bar. LESTER
FOOTAGE
- The scene where Luthor enters the White House has been extended with
more dialogue from Luthor and Zod (concerning "the son of Jor-El").
DONNER FOOTAGE
- An extension of the scene where the villains invade the Daily Planet
includes Non crushing Jimmy Olsen's "brand-new camera", Zod
claiming Jimmy is the son of Jor-El, and more jokes from Lex Luthor.-
DONNER FOOTAGE

- After the Taxi driver says"Man this is going to be good".
There is extra dialogue between Jimmy, Perry and Lois.
Jimmy: Is there another camera (remember Non broke the
first one)?
Perry: No, but there is a cup of coffee over there.(Like the
extended scenes with Zod and Ursa, Jackie Coopers voice sounds
slightly different)
Lois: Go get him the coffee Jimmy. DONNER
FOOTAGE
- A great moment during the battle scene that wound up in the extended
TV edition - here is the dialogue: Superman: "I'm not a coward,
Zod". Ursa: "Let him prove it" Zod: "Possibly not"
. "It is extremely likely that you are merely a fool... like father,
like son. Superman (smiling): "Somehow I just can't hear you, Zod!"LESTER
FOOTAGE
- The scenes during the battle are longer. The scene of Non chasing
Superman is longer, music has been changed in order to pad in with the
extra footage. Much of the extended footage were scenes that placed
more emphasis on Ursas and Nons contribution to the battle.
LESTER FOOTAGE
- After Superman kicks
Non, we return to Planet. This time Lex notices the coffee. He is seated
the same way as he is when the villains return to the Planet
Jimmy: Hey thats the chiefs?
Lex: Chiefs got it.
Jimmy: Should have spiked it! -
DONNER FOOTAGE
- The Kryptonian's announcement of Superman's withdrawl is longer.LESTER
FOOTAGE
- Footage has also been added to the tail end of the scene where the
villains return to the Daily Planet and plot to kill Superman at the
Fortress. DONNER FOOTAGE
- In the scene where Lex says he knows "Superman's address"
-- Zod: "What do you want? I see the greed in your eyes."
Lex: (after a couple of lines)"CUBA"- DONNER
FOOTAGE
- More great dialogue between Zod and Luthor on the flight to the Fortress:
Zod: "I trust you are not wasting my time, Lex Luthor". Luthor:
"Of course not, Your Turbulence!". LESTER
FOOTAGE
- They land outside the Fortress of Solitude. Zod comments on Superman's
home, whilst Lex hides behind Lois to evade Non.- DONNER
FOOTAGE

- As the villains attempt to enter the Fortress, Non is held back by
an invisible force field that throws him back to the ground. Which brings
up an interesting issue... if Superman, Lois, and Luthor could enter
the Fortress, why not the three villains? Great line by Zod - "He
is one. We are three. It is the strength of three that will defeat him
together." - DONNER FOOTAGE

- When Zod discovers Superman, he calls the Man of Steel "a misbegotten
brat". During his "Son of Jor-El will be my slave" speech,
he decides Lois Lane will be the first one to "pay for Superman's
defiance". - DONNER FOOTAGE
- A scene showing Superman trying to rush to Lois, but Non grabs him,
holds him back and throws him to the ground.- DONNER
FOOTAGE

- More dialogue after Lois
is held hostage.
Zod: We have no more use for this one. Kill him!
Lex: Him?(He is pointing to Superman, but Non points to Lex).
Him?(Him being Lex. We see Lex pointing a finger towards himself)
- DONNER FOOTAGE
- Right before Superman tells Lex about the molecule chamber, there
some more dialogue between them as Lex tries to convince Superman he
is on his side now, finally Supes says "Well, Luthor, I guess there
may be some hope for you yet..." The lines are an improvement,
because without this dialogue, it looks like Superman believes Lex too
quickly.- DONNER FOOTAGE

- There is a shot of the Arctic police on the outside arresting
the villains. It can be found before Lex would have said "...So
what do you say. Who would be the wiser...". -
DONNER FOOTAGE
- When Lex exits the Fortress of Solitude to meet with the police,
Lex tries to con Superman into laying low as a boxer "How about
the Metropolis Masher?" , with Lex as his manager - DONNER
FOOTAGE

- As Luthor is leaving in cuffs with the Arctic patrol, he is busy
negotiating percentages with Superman. Luthor: All I ask is ten percent....
How are you doing?... Eight percent... One more offer, five percent!
Arctic Patrol: Let's go. Luthor: No? 3? 2? 1? Superman says Blast off
- DONNER FOOTAGE
- Superman is shown destroying the Fortress of Solitude. -
DONNER FOOTAGE

- Superman destroys the Fortress of Solitude,t hen Lois says, "I
got the man I love to love me, didn't I?" , to which Superman replies,
"Oh, yeah." Superman wants to continue see Lois, but when
he realizes it won't be the same, Lois gives him a kiss "just so
you'll never forget it". This scene lasts for 2 minutes -
DONNER FOOTAGE

- At Lois's pad, we see Superman and Lois' breakup. here is an excerpt
from this scene :- Lois:"I promise I won't tell anyone" Superman:"I
know Lois, I know". In the normal version that excerpt was used
as voice overs when they fly back to the apartment. Here is some more
dialogue -
Superman: "We can still see each other, you know? I mean, all the
time. But it just can't be..." At this point Lois interrupts him
and kisses him. In turn they both kiss, and we can see the anguish in
their faces as they know inside that they're breaking up. Lois: "Just
don't forget, that's all. Don't ever forget" . We can see Superman
on the verge of tears at this point. - DONNER
FOOTAGE
- As Clark Kent leaves the Daily Planet, Jimmy shows off his new camera.-
DONNER FOOTAGE
- A jerk cuts in front of Clark to his elevator, he says some mean
things to Clark and the elevator doors flatten Clark's hat. Clark gets
a look of realization on his face and rushes to a storeroom. This confrontation
obviously reminded Clark to get some revenge on that bully in the diner,
which immediately follows. - DONNER FOOTAGE

- The final end credits
are longer in the TV version than in the theatrical version. Originally,
the theatrical cut did not have the credit to Howard R. Schuster, nor
did it have the Zoptic logo credit, but both were in the later re-release
of the film. The end cue music is extended by about a minute, as additional
credits are displayed. And the "Coming Soon - Superman III"
credit is removed from the TV edition.
TRVIA ON THE EXTENDED VERSION OF SUPERMAN II
- The extended version of
"Superman II" ran three times, in 1984, 1986, and 1988. In
the final rebroadcast in 1988, two more scenes were inserted into the
film, both towards the end of the film, the scenes where Luthor is trying
to negotiate and when Superman and Lois kiss with extra dialogue.
- Some scenes were edited out in the extended
Superman 2. For Example :
Much violence in the opening White House scene was left out;
Much of the bully's line in the bar ("I don't like your meat anyway!")
was altered to "I don't like you anyway" as the original line
was too sexually suggestive for ABC;
About 35 seconds of the "battle of Metropolis Road" (Superman
flying over Metropolis River) was deleted;
Some language and profanity were re-dubbed;
- The voices in the expanded
scenes of Zod and Ursa sound different. Zod's sounds like a different
actor had dubbed in his voice, while Ursa sounded younger. The voices
are actually Terence Stamp and Sarah Douglas, they just hadn't re-looped
their dialogue for these scenes in post production.
- The first Canadian broadcast
of Superman II had an additional few seconds of dialogue as Luthor and
Ms. T. were stopped on a snow bank admiring the Fortress of Solitude.
In the first U.S. broadcast (the same evening) the scene begins abruptly
as Luthor starts the snow mobile immediately after the dialogue sequence.
- The extended cut was shown
on RTE (Irish Channel) in the 80s.
My review
of the II Extended Edition.
The extra scenes or at least most of them improve
the quality of Superman 2, mainly because most of them are Donner's scenes.
I don't regard the theatrical Superman 2 a better film than the first
because of Lester's ideas which doesn't link properly to the first film.
All the extra Luthor scenes are brilliant, his lines are genuinely funny
especially in the extended prison sequence with Otis, the extended Fortress
sequence and at the end after the villain's demise. There is one really
good extended scene I like and it is at the end just before Clark's revenge
on the bully. When Clark realises he has to get his revenge, he rushes
off to the storeroom to change, this reminded of the old series in the
50's. The destruction of the Fortress wasn't a good sequence because of
the rather abrupt cuts to the shots, bad editing by the TV network. Superman
flying past Concorde; the music was brilliant here but when Superman flies
down, it looks bad, this shot was never unfinished in 77/78.
So,
I am in favour for an extended version of Superman 2, the improvements
really help, especially Luthor's scenes and the chance to see Donner's
extra footage. Maybe one day we will see all the footage Donner shot for
2.
