SUPERMAN II - THE SCRIPTS 1974/1975 Mario Puzo excepted the job, he turned in 2 drafts for both
Superman 1 and 2, after which, he was exhausted and declined any further
major involvement. He did visit the sets and might have been involved
in shaping the script for a day or 2 on set in 1977.
Before Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz made revisions
to this version, Guy Hamilton was to direct. Guy Hamilton dropped out
because Production moved from Italy to England, and he couldn't shoot
in England because of tax).
The Writer's guild rule allows only 4 writers to be credited,
hence Tom Mankiewicz has Creative Consultant credit. Tom and Donner revised
the sequel screenplay. This script is dated April, but revisions began
in late 1979. Further revisions throughout the production of both films
until everything stopped on Superman 2 and all energy focused on part
1. About 85% was filmed, but reshoots were probably needed because of
new and bigger ideas. Donner was fired in early 1979.
Before the Newmans returned, George Fraser and Guy Hamilton's
brief was to accomodate the Donner scenes within a Lester film framework.
They began writing in Paris, some of their work is in the final film,
but we do not know the size of the contribution. Newmans came aboard eventually
and worked with Lester for the rest of the production. It's unknown how
much material George and Guy provided. George was apparently unhappy with
lack of credit.
